Governance and Intellectual Property

How the 1EdTech standards portfolio is governed and the IPR framework that protects implementers.

Governance and IPR

Every specification in this portfolio is developed under the 1EdTech Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) policy. Members contribute under royalty-free terms so that institutions and vendors can implement any final specification without paying licence fees.

For implementers, the key references are the IPR policy, the specification license, and trademark guidance. The distribution notice appended to specifications summarizes these terms for product and service development.

Decision-making

  • Working Groups draft and evolve specifications, with public review at each major milestone
  • Technical Advisory Board reviews architectural consistency across the portfolio
  • Board of Directors ratifies final specifications and oversees governance

Lifecycle states

A specification progresses through the following states, displayed as a badge on every document:

  • Draft — early authoring, contributing members only
  • Candidate Final — feature-complete, under member review
  • Public Candidate Final — open to anyone with an authenticated account
  • Final — ratified and publicly available

The access controls on each document reflect its current state automatically.

Reporting issues

Errata, clarifications, and improvement proposals are tracked publicly on the Standards Feedback board. File an issue against the relevant standard and a Working Group member will triage it.
